LAPP hosts a photo exhibition on the daily lives of scientists in Ukraine

Since 22 January 2024, the Grande Galerie of LAPP has been hosting a photo exhibition titled “Shelter for Science” by Ukrainian photographer Oleksandr Osipov. The exhibition will be open to the public during the upcoming LAPP Wednesdays event on 14 February from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM.

The photos were taken in Kharkiv, Ukraine, in the spring of 2022 at the beginning of the large-scale Russian invasion. The relentless bombings forced scientists and their families to take refuge in the basements of their institutes. There, they continued to work on the development and production of scintillation materials for particle physics detectors.

Kharkiv is one of the main centers for scintillator production worldwide. Their products have been used in numerous experiments in which LAPP scientists have been or are involved, such as BaBar, ATLAS, CMS, etc.
Scintillators are materials that emit flashes of light when exposed to various forms of radiation, such as X-rays, gamma rays, or charged particles.

Today, nearly two years after the start of the war, as Kharkiv and other Ukrainian cities once again face daily missile strikes from Russia, this story of human resilience is more relevant than ever.
