MUST mesocenter

A shared infrastructure for high-performance computing and scientific data storage and processing

MUST is a shared computing and storage centre attached to the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) and the Université Savoie Mont Blanc (USMB).

It addresses scientific computing needs in the fields of particle physics and astrophysics, as well as theoretical physics, materials science, information processing and artificial intelligence. It contributes to the exploitation of scientific data from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) within the global infrastructure (WLCG) and is also open to the European Grid (EGI). Its contributions are diverse:

  • Massive storage and processing centre for LHC (CERN) data

  • Shared infrastructure to support the University’s laboratories

  • Open to the European Grid (EGI) and economic partners

  • Expertise in Digital Infrastructure Engineering, Network Systems Administration, High-Performance Computing and Artificial Intelligence

  • Shared governance and long-term funding (CNRS, USMB)

  • Digital Platform for Education and Open Science

Inaugurated in 2007, MUST was certified as an IN2P3/CNRS platform in 2017. Also a USMB mesocentre, MUST is positioned as an intermediary infrastructure between the large computing centres and researchers’ workplaces, and has a 170m2 room in the Maison de la Mécatronique, close to LAPP.

The platform brings together human resources, equipment, software and scientific applications, providing an environment suitable for High-Performance Computing (HPC) as well as for processing large volumes of data, and encouraging exchanges between researchers, experts in scientific computing and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Since 2020, MUST has been supporting businesses in their digital transition through the IDEFICS project.

IDEFICS : Boosting the digital transition of local businesses

Launched at the end of 2019, the IDEFICS project is an initiative led by LAPP and financed by the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes region and the European FEDER fund. The project benefits from the MUST platform and the expertise in Artificial Intelligence and Big Data of the engineers and researchers at LAPP and LISTIC. Its aim is to accelerate the digital transformation of companies in the region, while strengthening local skills in these specialist areas.

IDEFICS has strengthened the MUST platform with state-of-the-art equipment, including the latest generation GPUs, a cloud infrastructure and high-capacity servers.

More than 40 experts from business and academia, notably through projects such as ADTP, SKIPLY and HELIOCITY, have been trained. The project has gained in visibility thanks to its active communication on social networks and its participation in key events.
