Project Scientist in ESCAPE (M/F)

Are you a scientist familiar with data analysis, digital challenges and interested in open science and FAIR data management? Would you like to evolve in a multidisciplinary context and participate in EU priority programmes? Would you like to play a leading role in actions to ensure the integration of scientific data, tools, services and software, to promote common approaches to implement open data management for fundamental science? Would you like to be part of a major ESFRI research infrastructure in astrophysics or particle/nuclear physics, while strengthening your scientific leadership and management skills? This position could match your expectations!

The CNRS-LAPP institute has invited applications from qualified candidates to serve as Project Scientist in support of the work programme of the ESCAPE (European Science Cluster of Astronomy & Particle physics ESFRI research infrastructures) international collaboration and in cooperation with the other four science clusters (ENVRI-FAIR, EOSC-LIFE, PANOSC, SSHOC). ESCAPE aims to address the Open Science challenges shared by ESFRI facilities (CTA, ELT, EST, ET, FAIR, HL-LHC, KM3NeT, SKA) as well as other pan-European research infrastructures (CERN, ESO, JIV-ERIC, EGO- Virgo) in astronomy and particle physics research domains.

Activities

The Project Scientist will have to play a relevant part in the international ESCAPE collaboration and a leading role in the context of the Horizon Europe OSCARS project, in which transdisciplinary synergies are built between the five thematic scientific clusters of the ESFRIs. In particular, the candidate is expected to ensure a series of activities in three contexts.

Management The candidate will be expected to:

  • integrate the OSCARS Management Team (composed of the Coordinator, the Project Manager, a Communication Officer, a Dissemination Manager, and Financial/Administrative Assistants);
  • support the ESCAPE Director;
  • monitor the progress of the various OSCARS WPs;
  • promote coordination and maintain interfaces between the two OSCARS technical WPs;
  • supervise the implementation and execution of the cascading grant open calls for open science projects and services;
  • support the promotion of ESCAPE and OSCARS in international fora;
  • coordinating the work on science dissemination and communication;

Development:

The candidate will lead the implementation of the Community-based ESCAPE Competence Centre – CCC (within the framework of the EU EOSC) by:

  • consolidating the set of competences of the astrophysics and particle physics community in data management and scientific analysis services;
  • analysing, structuring, and sizing the CCC’s offer in terms of mentoring support, training and coordinating actions for Open Science;
  • planning the CCC’s mission towards emerging thematic RIs (ESFRI or others);
  • promoting awareness, involvement and activity of CCCs within the wider scientific community;
  • cooperating with international partners to improve the robustness of data management and curation protocols and to increase awareness and implementation of Open Science workflows.

Scientific lead:

The candidate will have to:

  • ensure the scientific overview of ESCAPE domain-based open-science projects conducted by third parties and to be funded through OSCARS open calls;
  • monitor the funded projects and the publication of scientific results;
  • propose and foster, within the ESCAPE collaboration, mentoring actions in support of third-party funded projects;
  • participate in the organization of international training events and open science camps.
  • leading the ESCAPE/OSCARS local CNRS research team (composed of scientists, engineers and PhD students);

Skills

  • PhD in particle physics, astrophysics, computer science or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in data analysis.
  • In-depth expertise in at least one of the following domains: modern software programming languages, scientific data analysis methods, open science services, data-intensive services, grid and cloud computing, numerical simulations, numerical mathematics, high-performance computing.
  • Ability to collaborate and work across disciplines.
  • Knowledge and/or work experience in research project management.

Other skills:

  • Demonstrate rigor and reliability.
  • Have a good relationship, the sense of organization and the taste of teamwork.
  • Have the ability to manage their work autonomously, be able to take initiatives and be able to adapt quickly to the evolution of the project and tasks.
  • Ability to collaborate with experts in other areas and to apply knowledge in areas of expertise other than one’s own.
  • Ability to operate across organisational boundaries – in a matrix-style organisation.
  • The ability to work in the context of an international project.
  • Excellent spoken and written English.

Context

LAPP is a high-energy physics laboratory located in Annecy, 50kms from Geneva. The laboratory was founded in 1976 and is one of the laboratories of IN2P3 (Institut de Physique Nucléaire et de Physique des Particules), institute of CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique). LAPP is a joint research laboratory of the University Savoie Mont Blanc (USMB) and the CNRS-IN2P3. Close to 150 people are working at LAPP. Research carried out at LAPP aims at studying the ultimate constituents of the matter, their fundamental interactions, as well as exploring their connections with the large structures of the Universe.
The LAPP laboratory coordinates the ESCAPE international collaboration. The European Union member states, recognising the challenges of data driven research in pursuing excellent science, have launched the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) initiative. EOSC is a cloud for research data in Europe allowing for universal access to data through a single online platform. ESCAPE aims to address the Open Science challenges shared by ESFRI facilities (CTA, ELT, EST, ET, FAIR, HL- LHC, KM3NeT, SKA) as well as other pan-European research infrastructures (CERN, ESO, JIV-ERIC, EGO- Virgo) in astronomy and particle physics research domains.
The complexity of all these new research infrastructures grows rapidly, the data volume produced by them is seeing a tremendous increase and the software to analyse the data is becoming more and more complex. On the other hand, this data should be accessible to the growing scientific communities, as they collaborate and interact. The ESCAPE actions aim at delivering solutions to ensure integration of data, tools, services and scientific software; to foster common approaches to implement open-data stewardship; to establish interoperability within EOSC as an integrated multi-probe facility for fundamental science.

The OSCARS project brings together European Research Infrastructures (RIs) organized into five “Science Clusters” (ESCAPE, ENVRI-FAIR, EOSC-LIFE, PANOSC, SSHOC) along the ESFRI thematic research domains. Together with their broader scientific (user) communities, the RIs in the OSCARS project have two main objectives: (A) consolidating achievements from the five H2020 cluster projects into lasting interdisciplinary services and working practices; (B) leading and fostering the involvement of a broad range of research communities in EOSC via the development of new Open Science projects, that together will drive the uptake of FAIR-data-intensive research throughout the European Research Area (ERA). Such an objective will be pursued through funding calls open to all researchers.
